Winbox is a GUI interface application that
permits the administrative configuration such as control and managing
MikrotikRouter OS devices. Mikrotik devices square measure relatively low-cost
networking device used for firewalls, routers and switches. Winbox interface
functionality resemble almost same as
console function, due to which there are not any Winbox elements within
the instructions.
Winbox is originally Win32 binary file
setup for windows-based systems. It’s gonna be a lot easier to manage MikroTik
via Winbox rather than user interface or any command-line interface (like SSH
or terminal or HyperTerminal via RS 232). Generally, this uses port TCP 8291.
However, these are also often run in UNIX operating systems such as Linux and
Mac OS. In UNIX OS software package for Winbox is installed via impersonating
applications like wine. Steps to follow to install in Linux :
• Sudo add-apt-repository ppa:
ubuntu-wine/ppa
• Sudo apt-get update
• Sudo apt-get install wine
After the installation process for wine is
completed, download the latest version of an inbox. Run following command :
• cd Downloads
Check for winbox.exe file through ‘ls’.
Run
• Wine winbox.exe
If
you have successfully installed wine, a Mikrotik window will appear after
double-clicking on ‘winbox.exe’ file.
Winbox interface has been designed to be
instinctive for many of the users. MDI Interface consists of:
1. The main toolbar at the top wherever users add varied data fields,
like CPU and memory usage.
2.
The menu bar on the left - list of all available menus and sub-menus. This list
changes looking on what cases are inserted. For example: if the IPv4 package is
disabled, then IPv4 menu and every one of its sub-menu won’t be displayed.
3. Work area - space wherever all menu windows are opened.
Winbox is used as a tool to watch the
traffic of each interface, queue or firewall rule in real-time. Winbox supports
IPv6 property. It is possible to transfer files to/from the router via winbox
drag & drop features. Security measures follow the AES cypher encryption
(symmetric key) method. Under the tab of address table named neighbours, winbox
will describe all the available MAC addresses for devices on Layer 2
connections or same LAN.
By default, inbox shows most typically used
parameters. But generally, it’s required to ascertain parameters. For instance
"BGP AS Route".Winbox permits to tailor displayed columns for every
individual window.
For example to feature BGP AS path column:
• Go to little arrow button (1)
on the right side of the column titles and click.
• From appeared menu move to
indicate Columns (2) and from the sub-menu decide the desired column, in our
case select on BGP AS Path (3)Changes created to window layout are saved
-exited and re-opened the same column order and size is applied.
